A few points to consider:
- Before going anywhere, you will need to know if your bike would handle the trip and whether you have the
skills to do possible repairs and maintenance. If you’re a novice at mechanics and don’t personally work on your bike,
it would be invaluable to attend a basic motorcycle maintenance course. Ensure that you get a good idea of the mechanical
problems you might encounter, how you can overcome them and what tools to take with you.
- Maps need to be current and up to date; you may want to consult
travel and tour guides for scenic routes.
When planning your trip, have pre designated stops to eat, rest and refuel, also highlight garages for possible repairs.
- Decide whether you'll camp or stay in hotels and make appropriate reservations.
- Ensure that you have proper bike and
breakdown insurance in place.
- When travelling abroad, check that you’ve had the relevant vaccinations and if required, that your necessary visas are in place,
it’s also advisable to have a copy of your medical documents. Always travel with a
first aid kit.
- If you decide to go through a touring company, take the time to research them, referrals are always a good idea.
- Consider travel insurance.
- Set a realistic schedule and make allowances for spontaneous discoveries, unexpected events or foul weather.
If travelling with a partner or friends, make sure everyone's goals are included in the itinerary and that you
have a designated meeting place if you were to be separated.
- Never pass by something you need on the assumption that it will be available later, or cheaper i.e.: stopping for fuel or water.
- Luggage: The more you bring the heavier the bike and the more difficult it can be to handle, think carefully about your list of
items and minimise them where possible.
