History
- Royal Enfield started out as an English engineering company. Now famous for producing motorcycles,
Royal Enfield also produced bicycles, lawnmowers, stationary engines and rifle parts.
- Royal Enfield produced their first Motor Bicycle in 1901, essentially it was a 150 cc 1.5 hp engine mounted above the front wheel.
- The company merged with Alldays & Onions in 1907 and produced cars called Enfield-Allday up until 1925.
- In 1932 the first Bullet 500 cc single rolled off the production line.
- Despite having entered into the famous TT races between 1911 and 1935, Royal Enfield has never won 1st place.
- During World War II, production was geared towards the war effort. Models produced were the WD/C 350 cc side valve, WD/CO 350 cc OHV,
WD/D 250 cc SV, WD/G 350 cc OHV, WD/L 570 cc SV and the "Flying Flea" which was a 125 cc lightweight motorcycle that could be dropped by parachutes from aeroplanes.
- Royal Enfield’s have been sold in India since 1949.
- Between 1955 - 1960 Royal Enfield’s were painted red and marketed in the USA as Indian Motorcycles by the Brockhouse Corporation, who had acquired the rights to the Indian name after it went under in 1953.
- As with many other British motorcycle companies in the late 60’s, Royal Enfield saw the last of its English made machines.
Due to a struggling economy and Japanese competition, all English factories were closed by 1970. However, Enfield of India,
based in Chennai, continued and later bought the rights to the Royal Enfield name in 1995. Today Royal Enfield production continues
with motorcycles sold in over twenty countries.
- As far as the motorcycle brands are concerned, Royal Enfield is the only brand to span three centuries.
