History
- The first Matchless motorcycle was made in 1899.
- Matchless was the trading name of Collier & Sons, father H. Collier and sons Charlie and Harry.
- Like many motorcycle manufacturers of the time Collier and sons had started as bicycle manufacturers.
- In 1905 Matchless produced a JAP V-twin powered bike, which included one of the earliest swing-arm rear suspensions.
- Charlie Collier won the inaugural TT singles race in 1907 with an average speed of 38.21 mph, brother Harry won in 1909 with Charlie winning again in 1910.
- Matchless branded motorcycles had been produced in Plumstead, London from 1899 to 1966.
Matchless Clubs
AJS and Matchless Owners Club Limited
The AJS & Matchless Owners Club Limited caters for individuals and families who have an interest in either AJS or Matchless
motorcycles. The club produces its own monthly magazine (called Jampot) that is distributed to over 4,000 members worldwide as
well as having its own spares scheme to assist owners in keeping their machines in top working order.
