History
- Indian Motorcycles were originally built in Springfield, Massachusetts and are said to be America's oldest motorcycle brand.
- Indians most popular models were the Scout, made prior to WWII, and the Chief.
- Indian was founded as the Hendee Manufacturing Company by George M. Hendee and Carl Oscar Hedström.
- In 1907, Indian built its first V-twin, making it a strong competitor in racing and record-breaking.
- In 1914 world famous Erwin "Cannonball" Baker, rode an Indian across America, from San Diego to New York in a record 11 days.
- In 1930 Indian merged with duPont Motors, who in turn ceased production of duPont automobiles and concentrated the company's resources on Indian.
- Many Scouts were used in World War II but the famous model was dropped when public production restarted in 1946.
- Ralph B. Rogers purchased a controlling interest of the Indian company in 1945, under Rogers' helm, Indian discontinued the Scout and began to manufacture lighter models i.e.: the 149 Arrow, the Super Scout 249 and the 250 Warrior
- Production of all models was halted in 1953. Brockhouse and Royal Enfield bikes were imported from England and sold as Indians throughout the 1950s.
- Burt Munro of New Zealand used a modified 1920s Indian Scout to set a number of land speed records between 1962 and 1967.
